GROUND RULES

"A child needs freedom within limits."

Ground Rules: Image

Respect the Environment

  • Children must have a lesson on

materials before they can be used.

  • Children must use two hands to carry

Work materials or a chair.

  • Children must walk in the classroom at all times and walk around rugs.

  • Once children complete a lesson they must return it to the shelf ready for the next person.

  • Children must not harm the materials.

Respect Others

  • Children must not harm one another.

  • Children are to get the attention of a teacher by raising a silent hand rather than shouting across the room.

  • During circle time, raise your hand to speak.

Respect Yourself

  • Wash your hands before eating snack/lunch, after using the bathroom, or after blowing your nose.

  • Try your best each day and work hard!

Classroom procedures are essential for the environment of the classroom. Our procedures are established, taught, and modeled. The students know what is expected of them and therefore are able to be more independent, allowing the teacher to act merely as guide. The goal of our classroom is for procedures to be obtained in order to have a peaceful classroom.

We spend a long time at the beginning of the school year going over classroom ground rules and procedures. The procedures are discussed, modeled and practiced as a group. Lessons on the shelves are not to be practiced independently until they have been shown by an adult. These lessons are shown individually and as a large group.

When children are not following classroom procedures, the problem is addressed with the child individually. The child is modeled choices and ways to correct the undesired behavior. If the behavior continues they are asked to sit in the ‘watching chair.’ They are asked to watch how the other children are working peacefully, and think about ways they can do the same. If behavior is still not resolved, we then make a parent contact.
